Pathankot: Spelling out his agenda for wiping out the scourge of drug addiction which has hit Punjab like an epidemic during the last few years, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President, Mr. Partap Singh Bajwa, today assured the people that after getting elected, his first priority would be to move a private member’s bill in the Lok Sabha proposing death penalty for the drug dealers, smugglers and their political patrons. He said what was at stake was the future of this once the most progressive and prosperous state in the country.
Lambasting BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Mr. Narendra Modi for blaming alleged laxity on the border with Pakistan for the gigantic dimension of the problem in Punjab and thereby trying to rescue the Chief Minister, Mr. Parkash Singh Badal and his Deputy Chief Minister son, Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal, , Mr. Bajwa said the political patronage to the drug smuggling racket was too well known and corroborated even by the state Food and Supplies Minister, Mr. Adesh Partap Singh Kairon. Only such a stringent approach like capital punishment would prove to be the deterrent. He said the country would have to adopt the policy of zero tolerance to drugs and this could be done only by proposing strong steps on the pattern of Singapore and Dubai. He said majority of the youth in Punjab were hooked to drugs which were being manufactured within the state and easily available in every village. The so called shops supplying these drugs existed in even those villages where there was no doctor and this was too well known to the political rulers. “Gujarat too is a border state which Mr. Modi has been ruling since 2002. So is the case with Rajasthan. However, the magnitude with which drug addiction has hit Punjab is not the case with these two states. Both Mr. Modi and Mr. Badal are trying to shift the blame on the centre by talking of sealing the border. The synthetic drugs which are found in every nook and corner of Punjab are being manufactured in the state itself and not being smuggled from across the border”, he pointed out. He referred to the reported interview of Mr. Kairon who also happens to be the son-in-law of the Chief Minister in which he had said that it was too well known as to who was behind all this.
The PPCC chief said ever vigilant Border Security Force had been seizing large quantities of heroine being smuggled from across the border and Mr. Modi and Mr. Badal were casting aspersions on this valiant force by blaming lax vigilance on the borders for this state of affairs. He said Mr. Modi had admitted the gravity of the problem here but he was trying to shield his alliance partners. He said according to the reports with the government and various studies, only a microscopic minority was consuming heroine and the rest were on synthetic drugs, opium and poppy husk. “The Revenuer Minister Mr. Bikram Singh Majithia has been named by former cop Jagdish Bhola in the Rs. 6000 crore synthetic drug racket operating from the soil of Punjab. What stops Mr. Badal from handing over the investigation in this case to the CBI”, he asked. He said the problem was that Mr. Majithia happened to be the brother-in-law of Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal adding the names of some other ministers too had surfaced. Mr. Bajwa said it had happened perhaps for the first time that the addicts had started holding demonstrations demanding their doze which was earlier coming from Rajasthan where the sale of poppy husk was legal. It was being smuggled to Punjab under political patronage. He said introduction of this bill would be his first priority in the Lok Sabha. He said apart from this deterrent punishment, he would propose holistic approach to deal with this multi-dimensional problem.
